FAQs

Have Questions?

At Healing Horizons Mental Health & Wellness, we want you to feel informed and supported. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about working with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).

What is a PMHNP?

A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a licensed and board-certified clinician with advanced training in diagnosing, treating, and managing mental health conditions. PMHNPs provide both therapy and medication management when appropriate.

Can a PMHNP prescribe medication?

Yes. PMHNPs are licensed to prescribe and monitor psychiatric medications.  Medication is only prescribed when clinically appropriate and in collaboration with the patient.

Will I have to take medication?

Not necessarily. Treatment is individualized. Some clients benefit from therapy alone, others from medication, and many from a combination of both. Together, we will decide on the best plan for your needs.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

The initial visit is a comprehensive evaluation. We will review your history, current symptoms, and goals. From this, we will work together to create a personalized treatment plan.

How is a PMHNP different from a psychiatrist or therapist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs/DOs), while PMHNPs are advanced practice registered nurses with specialized psychiatric training. Both can prescribe and manage medications. Therapists focus primarily on talk therapy, while PMHNPs can provide both therapy and medication management.

What conditions can a PMHNP treat?

PMHNPs treat a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, insomnia, and more.

Do PMHNPs provide therapy as well as medication management?

Yes. Many PMHNPs incorporate supportive psychotherapy, coping strategies, and psychoeducation into sessions, in addition to medication management if needed.

How often will I need follow-up appointments?

Frequency depends on your needs and treatment plan. Initially, follow-ups may be every 2–4 weeks and later may move to every 1–3 months as symptoms stabilize.

 Is seeing a PMHNP confidential?

Absolutely. Just like any other healthcare provider, PMHNPs follow strict privacy laws (HIPAA) to keep your information confidential.

Can a PMHNP collaborate with my other healthcare providers?

Yes. With your permission, we can coordinate care with your primary care provider, therapist, or other specialists to ensure a holistic approach to your wellness.
